Bear with us for a second – we’ve got some statistics. Today nearly 90% of people have a mobile phone (a higher percentage than people with a toothbrush.), and almost 50% of people own smartphones. With affluent adults, nearly 70% own smartphones, and roughly 91% of smartphone users have their cellphones within arms reach 24/7. These numbers will only continue to rise. What does this mean for you? It means the cell phone is rapidly becoming the best way to keep in contact with your customers. We will go through a few ways to use mobile technology to help your business:
- Text messaging. This is most barbaric way to reach a person’s cell phone, but it is still effective and you know all of your customers can see it. The first step is getting people to sign up which sounds difficult, but if you provide reasons that benefit them, they should be happy to hand over the number. If your list grows long enough, you should integrate it with a database and use a monthly service to send texts. This is a relatively inexpensive way to have one or two way conversations with customers.
- Consider creating a mobile site or app for your business. Smart phones do not view the internet in the same way your computer does. They are in portrait as opposed to landscape. This means lots of horizontal scrolling, zooming, and long load times; which can be frustrating for your customers. Updating will make life easier on your customers.
- Use mobile ads, especially location based. Mobile ads are still relatively cheap, and they have a much higher response rate than any other form of advertising. Location based advertising is even higher because it lets people know about deals when they are near your store.
